Verband deutschsprachiger Berufsgenealogen e.V.

Our Standards

The Verband deutschsprachiger Berufsgenealogen e.V. wishes to promote the profession of genealogy and especially contribute to ensuring a uniform occupational profile and high qualification standards.

As a consequence, the members of our association are committed to high quality standards. Every member is pledged to uphold a mandatory code of conduct with respect to the client and the quality of his/her research. Violation of this code of conduct may lead to expulsion from the association.

The admission to the association is associated with an examination of the prospective member’s expert knowledge. For more information about this, see terms of admission.

If you are looking for help for genealogical research, our members are certainly the right contacts for you. However, if any problems do arise then let us know.

The three most significant principles of the Verband deutschsprachiger Berufsgenealogen e.V. are:

1. The association’s statutes

The association’s statutes form its constitution. These statutes control the basic duties of the members. They also control how the association functions in practice and how it reaches its decisions.

2. Its binding professional principles

Under these principles, the association’s members are bound to a predetermined code of conduct: professional prerequisites, operational prerequisites, basic stipulations concerning research methods and the writing of research reports, as well as behavior towards clients and colleagues. Every member states in writing that they will uphold these obligatory professional principles. Violation of these principles will lead to sanctions. These professional principles therefore portray the standards you can expect when you hire a member of the Verband deutschsprachiger Berufsgenealogen e.V.

3. General guidelines

These are considered to be a model for the profession. They should provide the individual member with suitable guidelines as to how they can set up a freelance consultancy as a professional genealogist.
